Across the industry, manufacturers have a way of introducing us to the sportier versions of their vehicles. At Acura, the Type S name refers to performance, but also to style and refinement.

The Acura lineup includes five vehicles: the ILX, TLX and NSX cars, as well as the MDX and RDX SUVs. Three of them get the Type S treatment: the TLX sedan, the purely sporty NSX, and the MDX SUV, the latest to receive this attention.
Each one delivers a completely different experience and that’s the magic of it all. All types of models benefit from the improvements grouped under the Type S letters, even the sporty NSX, which is only available in this way for the next year.
The Acura NSX Type S promises to leave its mark. Only 350 units will be produced worldwide, of which only 15 will be shipped to Canada.
With this already sporty variant, every little adjustment has been thought of to raise the already high bar. Mechanically, its twin-turbo V6, which is paired with three electric motors, will offer 600 horsepower instead of 573. Its torque will increase from 476 to 492 lb-ft. Aesthetically, it has a more aggressive, more defined style. It gets purpose-built Pirelli tires, as well as a carbon fibre roof that lowers the centre of gravity.
The Acura TLX Type S comes alive with a new 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine that invites 355 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque to the party. That’s enough to guarantee a thrill. And to that, of course, is added Acura’s all-wheel drive system. The SH-AWD (Super Handling All Wheel Drive) system is one of the most efficient in the industry and it makes sure to always keep you on the road. The same goes for the adaptive shocks unique to the Type S model.
And since performance comes in all sorts of colours, Brembo brake calipers (red) clamp down on oversized discs when it’s time to stop. The TLX Type S sits on ultra-lightweight wheels whose design is heavily inspired by the one found on the pure sports car NSX.
Inside, Type S touches are visible everywhere with logos, red stitching and a flat-bottomed steering wheel that adds a dose of sportiness to the presentation. The same goes for the seats, which combine leather and ultrasuede for an extra touch of class that should not be overlooked.
Finally, very soon, it will be the MDX SUV’s turn to receive the attention of the unique Type S approach. As with the TLX, there will be a change under the hood as the new engine described above will also be used in the MDX Type S. This model, which will naturally offer all-wheel drive and a high-performance suspension calibrated specifically for it, promises to give meaning to the letter S in SUV (Sport).
And just like the TLX, it will also get the Type S aesthetic treatment with logos, red accents and all the attention that will make it unique.
When it comes to the Type S at Acura, it’s more than just power, increased performance or a few aesthetic features. It’s a philosophy, a way of looking at things that takes us further.
